o What is the science of meditation?
The science of meditation is the process and practice that enables us to reach our purest state of being through the transformation of the mind. It enables us to transform the unconscious layers of our mind into pure awareness and to experience ineffable peace, infinite creativity and virtue.
o What are the benefits of meditation?
Through the regular practice of meditation techniques, you can
§ discover and live your real nature, which is oneness with the whole existence
§ transform every moment of your life into bliss, awareness, peace and liveliness
§ attain freedom from anxiety, stress and tension
§ become a master of your behaviour, mind, thoughts and emotions
o What are techniques of meditation?
Meditation techniques act as the photo-electric effect and liberate the mind from the conditionings, suppressions, animal and human natures. They gradually transform our unconscious layers into pure energy or pure mind, thereby leading to an expansion of consciousness. Meditation techniques contribute to a great extent to the well-being and health of the meditator for the root of all problems and illnesses is the mind.
o Why are there so many techniques of meditation? Can they be learnt from books?
There are innumerable techniques according to the different temperaments or levels of consciousness of people. For instance, dynamic techniques are more effective for people who are often active and do not have much free time. People who are intellectually and mentally active will prefer specific techniques such as introspection. Some passive methods such as zazen will not fit everyone. In any case, even the busiest person can find at least one technique that he can practise at any time.
However, all techniques must be learned from an enlightened being. They may be taken from books or elsewhere, but it is essential to have the guidance of a master during the practice.
o Will the practice of meditation conflict with my religion?
It depends on your understanding of religion. Meditation is a science and as such it is the purest state of religion. What you normally call religion is a greatly distorted version of that sublime science. Meditation cannot conflict with any religion if the latter is taken in its purest form. To be able to meditate one should be a revolutionary, not a blind believer.
o What physical effect does meditation have?
Meditation soothes the nerves, muscles and the whole body. However, if there is too much suppression in the physical and subtle bodies, then one may at times feel a little pain as the suppressed energy is being released. Also, meditation stirs up psychological and physiological effects as it restores everything in its right perspective. But you should not get worried as the master will advise you how to cope with these.
o How does one start meditation?
First, you need to have the desire to meditate and above all an open mind. Then you must seek for the guidance of an enlightened master and be receptive to him. The master will then guide you according to your level of consciousness and temperament. The master will accept and welcome you as you are, with your weaknesses and doubts, provided you come with an open mind and the willingness to grow mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
o Do I need to change my lifestyle?
The science of meditation recommends the middle path. Today most people’s lifestyles are irrational and unscientific. If such is the case for you, you will have to adopt a way of living that allows you to live in harmony with the laws of nature. Initially, you will have to dedicate enough time and a great part of your energy to practise various methods.
o Does meditation imply severe disciplines or impositions such as abstinence, vegetarianism, living in seclusion and so on?
There is no imposition or commandment from the master. With the practice of techniques and the guidance of the master, you will naturally change your lifestyle as your consciousness expands. You should understand that to meditate, one needs tremendous energy. Therefore the choice is yours – whether you wish to sacrifice and discipline yourself or waste all your energy through sensuality and irrational way of living.
o How much time do I need to devote to meditation?
The duration depends on a few factors such as the amount of time you can afford, the degree of your priority, the pace of your progress and so on. These can be discussed with the master. However, for quick progress, at least one hour should be devoted daily for the practice.
o What is enlightenment?
It is the culmination of years of meditation and the ultimate fulfilment of human life. Enlightenment happens when one attains cosmic consciousness or Nirvana, when the ego of the individual dissolves completely and he experiences oneness with the whole universe. It is the state of total awareness as all the unconsciousness has been transformed into pure consciousness. It is a new birth. In fact, it is beyond description.
