Meditation

Meditation is the state of blessedness or Godliness that shines forth when all distractions of the mind have dissolved away.  Distractions may be of innumerable forms.  Excitements, sadness, different moods, thoughts, emotions and other disturbances are the causes of a distracted mind.  Desire is the root cause of any form of mental distraction.  It engenders thoughts and these are like pebbles thrown into a tranquil lake which, in turn, will produce wave upon wave.  Desire, whether fulfilled or unfulfilled, brings mental disturbance and is the product of ignorance.  Ignorance is the illusion of considering the body as the real self.  Such delusion is the veil of the mind.  When self-knowledge is acquired, then one knows that the body is not the real self and it is mortal.  The mind is eternal, pure, all-pervading and free from all forms of waves that may distract it: it is transcendental.

Through the practice of concentration and self-analysis, one can get free from desire and thus all mental disturbances.  Then one experiences silence of the mind.  Or, we can say that the mind becomes like a screen for the projection of any film or image.  The screen becomes blank but fully vibrating with energy – that state of blessedness is called meditation.  A meditative mind leads one to one’s centre which is the source of all virtues.  For only a placid, peaceful and blissful mind can perceive truth.  Such a mind is intelligent and unfolds the secret of all forms.

Only a mind free from all distractions can judge.  Are we not all seeking peace of mind?  It is acquired not by vain talk or memorising scriptural verses, but by freeing the mind from all forms of image and sound, subtle or gross.  However, the delusion of the mind being so ancient and deep-rooted, man is completely under its sway.  Therefore, the ancient seers have devised a science to awaken it to the state of self-knowledge and to attain to the blessed state of meditation.  This is a scientific practice and can be brought about by scientific methods.

This science should be learned from an enlightened master.  Meditation will bring the greatest goodness to one and all.  Time has arrived to put aside all forms of foolish, fanatical and orthodox quarrels.  One need not embrace another religion or even adore other prophets.  As a science therefore, meditation is beyond all bounds of religion, sect, sex and other mind-created barriers.  It is for one and all.  Everyone possesses a mind and all minds are filled with unnecessary distractions, greed, anger, hatred and other evil qualities.  Then, should not one work to eliminate all these so as to live in peace and harmony with the whole of Nature and its creatures?

Let everyone practise his religion, but let us all acknowledge meditation as a universal science.  All else has failed to bring peace and harmony at individual and social levels.  Why not try meditation?  After all, there is nothing to lose.
