Apart from man, everything in existence forms a beautiful unity. For instance, water’s ‘waterness’is due to the unity of hydrogen and oxygen in the H2O molecule. The unity amongst all parts of nature and the constant exchange of information keep the whole world moving and also give each object or force its own specific characteristics. The sun gives light because of the unity of its particles. Similarly, the miracle of the human body is due to the unity of its cells, which are constantly exchanging energy. It is as if they have a team spirit with the aim of being a whole in harmony and in good health.
If nature is creative, beautiful and affluent, it is all due to the unity of all its elements and forces in its womb. In nature, the saying, “United we stand, divided we fall” really applies. The whole of nature shares a common aim : growth, peace, harmony and procreation, which are meant to serve as a base so that man can evolve into Divinity. But man is ignorant, arrogant, undisciplined and mad. If only we could have the same unity, team spirit and exchange of information and energy ! This is possible solely when we share a common vision or aim. What is the ultimate and true aim of human beings ? Science says that the aim of every moving object is to attain a state of perfect rest or equilibrium. This corresponds to the mystical experience where ultimately it is realised that man is a state of ineffable peace, which is also the essence of matter.
In regard to God, the Hindu mystic says, “Shantakaram” - “He whose form is peace.” They do not say that He has a personal form, but that He is all peace. Other mystics have said that He is all bliss, yet others have said He is pure consciousness. Indeed, He is all three. Each is a different layer of the same truth. The essence of existence is peace, bliss and consciousness. The harmony, beauty, order, unity and creativity we see in nature is due to the underlying oneness of that one principle, the essence of all.
Man seems to be apart from nature. He is divided in himself, his mind, heart and body being in a constant tug of war. His body is in one place, heart in another while mind is elsewhere. We do not listen to our body ; we do not look into its own needs but into those of the mind. For example, the body does not need cigarettes, alcohol, drugs and many other things, but we keep taking these because the mind and the senses are soothed by these. The mind is in itself fragmented into millions of bits and pieces. We have the conscious and unconscious layers. The unconsciousness is a huge chaotic dumping ground governing our entire life.
Man should learn from bees, which have such a beautiful and supremely intelligent social team spirit and see how sweet honey is. Likewise, if man learns to live in harmony and unity, life will become really sweet. Bees work for a common goal that of producing honey and their social organisation comes as a result of that objective. Man too must fit his objective according to his nature, only then will his way of life take shape according to that objective. And when the aim is Divinity, the way inevitably becomes dharma or righteous living. In their book “The Living Energy Universe”, Gary E. Schwartz and William L. Simon explain how at every level in nature, from the micro levels of atoms and molecules to the macro levels of solar systems and galaxies and everything in between, including people, when things and people come together, they can develop long-standing bonds “that bring out the best in each other.”
Today people talk of unity in diversity when in reality there is no diversity at all. It exists only in the human mind. Diversity in the mind is due to wrong perception arising from our fragmented consciousness. So what is the solution ? An increase or expansion of consciousness ! Yes, an expansion in our consciousness will resolve every problem. The more our consciousness expands, the more our perception of life will change. Ultimately, we will realise that life is a whole. With that realisation, we become whole, thus holy. Indeed, to become holy is the aim of human existence. We should strive towards being one, and then we will see that life is not unity in diversity, but the one playing the role of the many. Power, willpower and virtue spring from oneness, that is, unity, not from division or fragmentation.
