Laws ! Laws! Laws!

Laws are iniquitous! In a not faraway future, it will not be possible to step out of your house without satisfying a law. The blame is not totally on the rulers, however. What can they do? After all, their knowledge is limited to that only. The whole of society is responsible. People are undisciplined, irresponsible, barbaric, unconscious and selfish, and rulers know no other way than passing laws. Educating the mass would be against their interest.

Some people think that with laws we can enjoy liberty. What an illusion! My understanding is that laws make one robot-like, or a slave. You do not act spontaneously or intelligently, but rather for fear of the laws of the country. The Minister of Social Security and National Solidarity talked about a “world of liberty under the law, a world of democracy capable of providing its citizens with both order and liberty, safeguarding human rights and using force when is necessary as in the case of curfew to uphold local laws” (L’express 03/11/2009 – Straight Talk in Juvenile Justice).

Law cannot bring liberty. Human rights cannot be safeguarded by politicians who know only about passing laws. Laws, disciplines, rules and regulations and commandments, whether they are from prophets or others, bind and imprison us. I am not saying that we don’t need them – we definitely need them in society. However, we should see to it that we do not lose our freedom to judge, discriminate, be spontaneous, think, reason and understand.

Too many laws will make a slave or a robot out of us. Virtues and wisdom have to be sought for only that will make us human and thus intelligent and responsible citizens. Instead of delving into human nature to discover the why of people’s behaviour and to find solutions, our governing authorities find it easier to pass laws and be finished. Can’t they see that laws have never brought any change in consciousness, but can only temporarily delay people from breaking laws?

Laws and spontaneous morality, which I call virtue, should go hand in hand. Mere rules and regulations will always fail. If one is virtuous, then even laws become irrelevant. If we want a lawful society, then teach people to live in harmony with the natural laws of nature. But alas! That might sound like Greek to most people, especially to politicians. In our schools, colleges and universities, more emphasis is laid on how to do business, develop technology, be competitive and find food, clothing and shelter. Where has education led mankind? Why aren’t the great problems of life discussed and solutions sought?

A ‘dog eat dog’ world

Moral education, you have said! Who dispense them? What are the authority and experience of those people? Were they not yesterday’s students? Do they teach inner transformation? Government allots a huge budget to dispense religious education in schools, but where has all that led to? Have we been able to produce a single buddha? By buddha, I mean an individual who has undergone a complete emotional and mental transformation and in whom virtue flows spontaneously. Has any student been able to transcend his animal and conflicting human nature and become sane? Isn’t that the main aim of a true education system?

Our educational institutions are factories where instruments for the productions of goods and services are fabricated. Student comes out a ‘human resource’. After school, they have to struggle to survive in a ‘dog eat dog’ world. Some become efficient in their field, other becomes corrupt businessmen, politicians, traders, slaves to sensuality, drug dealers or gamblers; and still others become victims of stress and depression. Few alone are able to lead a sane life, this despite all laws, rules, regulations and disciplines at school and home. Don’t you think that the whole society, including religion, educational systems and politics, is on the wrong track?

Yes, it is easy to criticise. But what do I propose? Let me repeat it, I have always laid emphasis on self-knowledge or self-education. Everything else has failed. The ignorance and stubbornness of our rulers is so great, plus the complex human society created by religious fanatics and ignorant parents have made things extremely difficult. Therefore, we need a great intellectual and spiritual revolution to change everything, the whole trend.

Is it that many people are not only interested in self education because of their vested interests, but also against it? Because once society or rather individuals become wise, responsible and virtuous, many people, in particular political and religious leaders, will lose their importance!

At the threshold of the third millennium, while we are planning to colonise other planets, there is so much injustice in the world. Human rights are baffled, billions of people are malnourished; violence, wars, prostitution, rape and poverty are gnawing at society. We still think that war can give people their freedom, respect and dignity. We say, “Exigeons la dignité ou le respect.”How can you do that? Respect comes with wisdom regarding human nature, not by force.

Finally, let me be direct. Laws have failed and they will always fail as they cannot change the hearts and minds of people. They have very little use in today’s world. What we need is a global mind transformation. Let us work towards it and you will see that this alone will give birth to a new earth and a new humanity! Without going back to our soul, there is no possibility to change anything whatsoever. Hence, I invite intelligent people and others to start meditating.
