Who would believe this : people buy death and diseases in the form of pleasure ! Alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, junk food, snacks and soft drinks lead to diseases and eventually untimely death. Besides it is a big waste of hard earned money. People are so unconscious that they do not realise that what they call pleasure is nothing but sensual friction. In their ignorance, they grip to anything that soothes the senses, even though that ends up in a lot of suffering. With experience, many people know that certain things will bring pain to them, yet they continue to be addicted to those things. Habits die hard indeed !
World Class Education ! The term is not very clear to me, but if I go by logic, it means a level of academic education which matches those of developed countries like France, UK and so on. God bless, we do achieve this. However, after hearing the Minister of Education, Mr Bunwaree on radio a few months ago, I got a glimpse of his concept. He described the concept of World Class Education as an education that will help the student to face the harsh realities of life, to learn about respect and other virtues.
When and how he proposes to make our island reach a world class level in the field of academic education, I don’t know and won’t comment upon it now. What concerns me and in fact since always is how he thinks our students can have the wisdom and experience to be able to face the harsh realities of life. No academic, technical or other material knowledge can help anyone achieve that. How then will our students attain that ?
